Danube Gorge

The Danube Gorge spreads on 120 km from Bazias to the Iron Gates, the longest gorge on the Danube and unique in Europe through its grandeur. In the Danube Gorge the river is very narrow, only 180 m in width as it crosses between two mountains ranges.

The most beautiful sector is between Eselnita and Dubova. Cazanele Mici sector (5 km) is the most spectacular one with the head of Decebal carved in stone, in the valley of Mraconia.

Cazanele Mari (4 km) a natural area that is protected and where are several species of unique snakes and scorpions and an exceptional flora. At the entrance in the Cazanele Mari, there is a large cliff where the sailors used to stop and pray before descending in the fierce region of Cazane.

During the cruise you can also see the famous "Tabula Traiana" that was the point where Trajan`s road in Dacia started; the road continued for 40 km in the province of Dacia; "Tabula Traiana" is on the Serbian bank of the river. It was moved from the original location where the Romans carved it, 50 m higher, in order for it not to be covered by the waters of the river.

In the Cazanele Mari section are the submerged ruins of the medieval fortress of Tri Kule (14th century), from which can still be seen two towers emerging from the water.
