CAPERCAILLE
TETRAO UROGALLUS

HUNTING SEASON:
01.04 – 15.05

The Romanian cock lives in the alpine forests, at the edge of woodland vegetation, at altitudes of 1200 - 1500 meters. Romania has a substantial cock population of about 7800 specimens. An adult weighs about 4-5 kg.

Only male cocks can be hunted, chasing of hens being forbidden.

The best hunting period is between April 20 to May 10, when there is still snow in the mountains.

The hunting require a very good physical condition, to enable the hunter to climb (walking) 4-6 hours until the overnight place. As a rule, the trip to the hunting place starts in the afternoon, and the hunters spend the night in a hunting hut or sheepfold near the hunting place.

It is recommendable that the cock hunters meet in groups of 2-3 persons.

Recommended caliber for the cock hunting gun: very light calibers or shot guns.
