Sinaia Monastery

The monastery founded in 1695 by Spatharus Mihail Cantacuzino after his visiting to Sinai Monastery in Egypt, is the first construction on this location. In facts, The Monastery is the real symbol and ID of Sinaia town.

The name comes from Sinai, to remember the holly place of Mount Sinai. The monastery was dedicated to Saint Virgin Mary. The museum of monastery containing religious objects, icons, rare books, pottery and porcelain ware exhibition from 16th-19th century. A remarkable piece of monastery is gold embroidery, hand made during 3 years (1897 – 1900) by lady Ana Roth. There are 2 Russian icons, gifts from Nicolae II emperor to Nicolae, son of Ferdinand King, on 19003 with the occasion of baptized.

The church of monastery was built (1842 – 1846) in an architectural combined style: from north, like Moldavian churches and from south, Walahian – typical Brancovenesc style. Later, on 1892 was built the Tower’s Bell. The Bell weights over 1700 Kg and was done from Coltea Tower, Bucharest.

By the Carol I King carefully attention, in the church was installed the first electricity lighting.
