About the Danube Gorges

The Danube Gorges

The Danube Gorges are a 45 km length of water, having a width of 152 m at its narrowest path. Here, the old river carved  dramatic walls into the rocky mountains, almost vertically, leaving only a small window to the sky. The river is here 54 meters deep and the curved valley turns the water with a speed of 18 km / hour.  The water becomes more furious reaching the Great Gorges, releasing its power into a frightful roar of anger.

The entrance of the gorges of the great Danube is the point where time stops completely and another dimension is revealed. Maybe the one hiding the secrets of the great beginning… maybe the one imagined by the old  masters who carved the impressive rocks into human faces depicting our great ancient warriors. If only these huge rocks could speak … or maybe it is better to let the one entering these gorges to imagine their own story about this place, and find their inspiration in the surrounding landscapes, the stone embroidery carved by great winds, rains and water.

This world is one of mystery and dreams and its wild perspective is crossed by impressive rocks, scattered like light wounds in Danube’s massive body.  The pine forests rising on the  banks of the old river pierce the sky in a high note. And the still and frightful mountains hide many little rivers trembling along the rocks and drowning into the unknown of the dark green forests.

This land is more known by the embargo smugglers rather than by … the tourists.

The hills on the banks of the river reveal many secrets of  life: scattered fishing villages that became rich during the Serbian embargo, rich orchards and vineyards and even the remains of a great defense Roman Castrum
