Infamous communist prison, Sighetu Marmatiei.

The Council of Europe designated the Sighetu Memorial as one of the main memorial sites of the continent, alongside the Auschwitz Museum and the Peace Memorial in Normandy.

Hightlights: Wooden Churches and craftsmen of Vadu Izei

Route: Sighetu Marmatiei – Barsana – Desesti - Vadu Izei (40km)

Maramures Wooden Churches were built in the 17th and 18th century without any iron boils.

The Wooden Churches have been classifed in the UNESCO Heritage since 1999, in order to protect their architecture combining orthodoxy with gothic influences.

Barsana  (57 m high ) was built in 1720. the tallest wooden churches in Europe.

Hightlights: Old steam locomotive and folkloric show

Route: Sighetu Marmatiei – Viseu de Sus – Ieud (80 km)

Steam locomotive, crossing the Vaser Valley and its unique landscapes. It is one of the most impressive narrow paths of the Eastern Carpathians, with mountains, forests, numerous waterfalls and mineral water springs.

Izvorul Cailor (Horses Spring)  and lunch near Rodnei Mountains Pietrosul Massif (Rodnei Mountains) – 2,303 m high and 10 km away from Borsa. This is the most important natural reserve (numerous glacial traces: ridges, valleys, funnels, and moraines). UNESCO has declared it a biosphere reserve.

Ieud - the oldest wooden church of Maramures, built in 1364. In its loft, the ‘’Ieud Codicile’’ with its 3 most valuable Romanian manuscripts was discovered, dating back to 1391.
